Passive Building Design Strategy According to Design Parameters in Hot Climate- MaÄŸusa Case

Thesis Abstract

Passive building design is a divergent subject in terms of its regulation and standardization. It is then important to diminish the divergency while keeping the research apt to the specifications and individual characteristics of each country. This researcher focuses on the subject matter in the hot climate of Famagusta. The ultimate objective is to find ways to minimize overall energy use in buildings by addressing numerous elements that were proven to significantly affect energy efficiency including the building envelope, orientation, location, and use of renewable energy.  The influence of active and passive precautions on indoor thermal comfort should be examined and classified appropriately to indicate the amount of benefit from each. Estimating the thermal efficiency of existing structures and new construction should take into account the system's integration capability and the effectiveness of each system in reducing energy waste.

By examining various methodologies, this thesis intends to construct a system for architects, designers, and energy consultants to improve indoor thermal comfort by taking appropriate precautions depending on climatic conditions and building constraints. Fulfilling the lack of a systematic approach that takes the environment into account would be the first step toward incorporating the most beneficial approach for maximizing energy savings while considering the budget and evaluating the situation more efficiently as a powerful tool for reducing building energy consumption.

The dynamic mathematical calculation technique, which is supported by advanced computer tools, enables the running of digital simulations and the analysis of numerous models in order to actualize changes under diverse scenarios. The usage of a CFD simulation software was selected for this thesis since it is the most appropriate method for analyzing simulated situations. The comparison of simulation results and classification of outcomes indicated the reaction to each factor's value and its influence on thermal comfort. The methodological approach developed for architects serves as a guide for developing appropriate methods that are adaptable to hot climates, but the process also serves as a guide for adapting to other climate conditions and properly locating them within the process, as well as for finding a relevant response to any area. A methodological approach was used to provide a guideline for forecasting the performance of buildings under diverse circumstances.
